Fire the Energy of Summer

Fire the Energy of Summer

Fire is the Energy (Qi) of Summer

The Fire Element gives us warmth, the capacity to love and be loved. It enables us to mature and blossom and enjoy life and summertime.

The Fire Element

In Traditional Five Element Acupuncture Summer is associated to the Fire Element. Each of the Five Elements has organs and meridians. In the Fire Element, these are the Heart and Small Intestine, with the help of the Triple Heater and Pericardium. The Heart is known as the Supreme Controller, a VIP we cannot live without our heart. For more information about the Five Elements – see page –

Summer

Summer arrives after the preparation from Winter and the rains of Spring. The sunshine of Summer allows the earth to flourish, grow and mature. A garden needs the energy of the sun, water and your care and love to grow and prosper. This relates to humans as well. In relationships, work, and leisure and how we interact with the world. If we do not nourish our Fire we may wilt and perish as a plant will.

Eating to Nourish Fire

What and how we eat are important to keep the Fire Element strong. Good nutrition is vital to maintaining a healthy heart, to fuel a healthy and happy heart and circulation. Eating a well-balanced diet of healthy vegetables, fruit, fats, legumes, wholegrains, and fluids. Avoiding ultra-processed foods, too much caffeine, alcohol and stopping smoking. Cutting down on high fats, sugars, reducing meat, dairy, and fatty foods. Eating with freinds and family in a loving relaxed enviroment – yes can help your digestion and nourish your Fire Element.

Move to circulate your Qi

Keeping moving is vital throughout the day; it is good to exercise your body at least every 3 hours (and move every hour). This could be standing on your toes, squats, or arm swinging. And when you can do move a walk, run, exercise class, gym, swim run around with the kids. The key is regular movement every day throughout the day to feed your heart circulation muscles, and your entire system. An effective way to stimulate your circulation and digestion is to do a 10-minute walk after each meal – try it, it makes you feel good!

Fire Emotions

The emotions related to fire are Joy, Love, and apathy. A person whose Fire element is in balance creates, gives, and receives love, can be spontaneous, feels free, and connects with loving care, has a passion for life, with warmth to themselves and those around them in a loving, joyful way.  Summer is also a time for holidays which can bring joy and love into life.

When the Fire Element is out of balance, a person can be hot and cold emotionally, be extremely excited, then very flat, and insular, to feel apathetic and vulnerable and separate themselves into isolation.

Keeping your Balance

To find your Fire Element balance, be kind to yourself, find a space in your day/ week to have time to care for your emotions – journal, think of what you are grateful for, however small. Be warm but not overheated, find light in your day, dance, sing, run and jump, feel the sun on your face. It is also good to balance movement with stillness and rest to enable the Fire Element to find balance.
