The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) welcomes the ambitious vision for reform in the recently published NHS Long Term Plan, “Fit for the Future”.

To continue on the theme of Acupuncture health care and prevention of illness, let’s hope the NHS begins to realise the advantage of Traditional Acupuncture to help with keeping the population  – “Fit for the Future”

The British Acupuncture Council CEO Alex Jacobs gives his thoughts on this matter.

The NHS is at a crossroads

“The NHS is at a crossroads, and the ‘Fit for the Future’ plan rightly calls for a level of action commensurate with the challenges the UK currently faces” states BAcC CEO, Alex Jacobs. “Traditional acupuncture, delivered by our PSA-accredited members, offers a powerful, medication-free, existing solution to many of the critical issues highlighted by Lord Darzi in his investigation of the NHS published last year.”

“From the crises in chronic disease and mental health, health inequalities and an ageing population, to the urgent need for preventative and community-based care,” Jacobs added, “our members are already working within NHS settings, helping to ease the pressure. With an appropriate level of integration and support, we can do so much more.”

From sickness to prevention

The plan encourages citizens to play their part. Traditional acupuncture is preventative and can be used to resolve issues at an early stage before recourse to other interventions such as medications, that have significant side effects.

In addition, traditional acupuncturists are highly effective in supporting patients in making positive lifestyle changes. BAcC members, with their comprehensive minimum 3-year degree-level training, also act as an early detection network, recognising when to refer patients to conventional medicine.

The key roles that traditional acupuncture can play in prevention, lifestyle change, and early detection, represent a significant cost-saving to an NHS that faces increasing funding challenges.
