Autumn – Acupuncture with the Seasons

Autumn – Acupuncture with the Seasons

Autumn Guides Us to Letting Go

Autumn shows us, to let go of the abundant creation of the past year in its grand final display. Autumn marks the end of the growing season – a turning inward, a falling away of outer-directed energy. Leaves turn to vibrant colours and drop, to enrich the soil to promote new growth.

Nourishment for New Growth

The energy of this Autumn supports our letting go of what we no longer need, gaining the nourishment of the past. For us to be receptive to the pure and new, which will emerge from the letting go. Granting us a vision of who we are in our essence. Revealing what is most precious in our lives.

The Metal Element – Grief

Autumn is the season of the element Metal. Grief is the emotion of the Metal element, in the Traditional Five Element Acupuncture.  We all experience loss, separation, and “letting go,” and we appropriately feel the expression of grief.

Grief cleanses us of what is no longer needed in our lives. When the energy of Metal is blocked or imbalanced within us, our expression of grief likewise becomes imbalanced and inappropriate. Grief may be excessive and ongoing. Or maybe absent, as in those who cannot express their grief.

Lungs and Colon

The organs related to The Metal Element and Autumn are the Lungs and Colon. These work together as a pair, taking in the pure, eliminating waste.

The Lungs and Inspiration

The Lung, enables us to take in the pure, the new. It grants us the inspiration of a breath of fresh air. In Traditional Five Element Acupuncture, the Lung is described as “the receiver of the pure QI from the Heavens.” Our breath is vital to life.

The Colon and Letting Go

The Colon has the function of eliminating what is unnecessary or toxins from our Body Mind and Spirit. The Colon functions on the physical mental and spirit level enabling us to let go of what is not needed.

Imbalance of Body Mind and Spirit

The Lung and Colon work together as a team, one taking in the pure, and the other eliminating waste. When the Body is not functioning ailments may occur in the Lungs and Colon such as bronchitis, shortness of breath, Asthma, coughs, allergies, nasal congestion, emphysema, colds, sore throat, constipation, diarrhoea, IBD, IBS and abdominal pain.

On a Mind and Spirit level are unable to take in purity, waste keeps building up in your system. Instead of tranquillity and inspiration, spontaneity and freshness;- depression, stubbornness (inability to “let go”), isolation, and negativity may be felt.

This is not a chosen way to act and feel that way anymore we would choose to have constipation – but in this condition of the imbalance.

Community of Functions

Traditional Five Element Acupuncturists view our body as a community of different organs and functions. Any organ could break down if its waste was not carried away and allowed to fester. In this view, we do not simply treat a symptom, we must find the cause. If the cause is an imbalance in Metal – if the Lung is unable to take in the pure, or the Colon is unable to eliminate waste – we must first restore that function. Then the resulting symptoms will improve when the balance is restored.

Restoring our Metal

The Metal element is at its peak in Autumn and a good time for seasonal treatment of Traditional Five Element Acupuncture.

Traditional Five Element Acupuncture can help resurrect and rebuild the Metal Element within in its physical expression as well as in mind and spirit. Acupuncture treatment helps restore the Metal Element using extensive knowledge of Qi to treat the acupoints in you.

Embracing the Seasons

You can also help yourself by learning to live in harmony with the seasons. Try to eat seasonal food, enjoy the Harvest, slow down, be calm, keep warm, move gently and let go.
