Neck Pain and Traditional Acupuncture

Traditional Acupuncture helps to avoid or reduce the need for pain medication. Offering a holistic and alternative approach to alleviating neck pain.

Neck pain can be associated with symptoms that radiate to the arms or head, and may involve one or several neurovascular and musculoskeletal structures such as nerves, nerve roots, intervertebral joints, discs, bones, muscles and ligaments often becoming a debilitating and painful condition.

The majority of neck pain is considered non-specific, which means that it is not caused by a specific pathology such as a tumour or fracture. Muscle tension and spasms are common reasons for neck pain, which, left untreated, can become chronic.

Neck Pain treatment challenges

Neck pain is a major cause of disability worldwide, affecting a person’s ability to work. Paracetamol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are common pharmacological treatments. Though side effects may be more common when these drugs are used long-term for chronic neck pain. For NSAIDs, there may be gastrointestinal-related adverse events and an increased risk of serious cardiovascular and renal complications; also, paracetamol is not necessarily a safe option.

Many people, including those who have had no improvement with medication, are interested in complementary and alternative medicine such as acupuncture to help manage pain. There is mounting evidence to support acupuncture being a good choice in the management of acute and chronic pain (Yin 2017; Coutaux 2017).

The Role of Traditional Acupuncture

Traditional Acupuncture helps to avoid or reduce the need for pain medication. Offering a holistic and alternative approach to alleviating neck pain. Traditional Five Element Acupuncture is a holistic therapy rooted in ancient Chinese and Japanese traditions. This involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the body, mind and spirit’s healing response. Treating neck pain offers good benefits with none of the side effects of medication and surgery.

Personalised comprehensive care approach

When you start Traditional Five Element Acupuncture, your acupuncturist will take a comprehensive medical history, including any current or past medical conditions, medications, surgeries, injuries, allergies, and relevant details about your health. Asking about emotional health, your movement and exercise, eating, and sleeping habits. About your digestion, bladder and bowels, any issues with periods, menopause, pregnancy or birth. About your lifestyle, exercise, hobbies, work, family and stress.

All this is relevant to your treatment, as each person is treated individually and holistically.  As each person’s pain and how it has evolved into what it is today and how it affects that person, is all important.
