My Dyslexia

I am Dyslexic with a bit of ADHD, some dyspraxia, probably dyscalculia as I am terrible at maths! I recently discovered I have some degree of hypermobility after damaging my knee. Discovering the description Neurodiversity.

I struggled at school though worked very hard. I got there getting ‘o’ levels eventually then was able to train as a Enrolled Nurse, then on to train in Traditional Five Element Acupuncture.

I as many people of my age have struggled and masked their way through life, I had a diagnosis of Dyslexia at 30 years old, which made perfect sense! I also got a wonderful pair of glasses that stopped the wobbly words (yes that is real)  and increased my reading speed by 25% thanks to Duffy Optometrists: https://www.duffy-optometrists.co.uk/

What is Neurodiversity

The range of differences in individual brain function and behavioural traits, regarded as part of normal variation in the human population – Dictionary – origin 1990’s neuro + diversity

Neurodiversity refers to diversity in the human brain and cognition, for instance in sociability, learning, attention, mood, and other mental functions. It gives an inclusive view of cognitive diversity, highlighting the differences at a neuro-biological level while considering the socio-cultural contexts of a human’s lived experience. Wikipedia

Neurodiversity is an umbrella term covering a number of neurodevelopmental conditions:-

  • ADHD
  • Autism
  • Dyslexia
  • Dyspraxia
  • Dyscalculia
  • Dysgraphia
  • And more

There are many levels or spectrums that these show and express in each person as we are all individuals.

Acupuncture Help with  Neurodiversity

Therefore I have discovered that I am described as Neurodiverse, I am writing this as I treat many patients who are neurodiverse or who have family members who are.

Many of my patients are discovering this in later life, after years of struggle with often anxiety and depression a large factor in thier life. Finding that Traditional Five Element Acupuncture can help in their ability to understand themselves, finding the way forward and learning some self care and help to manage thier mental health.

I encourage and support patients with the different types of neurodiversity and their family members, because in so many cases anxiety and depression come along side. This is often due to how many of use are misunderstood and damage by being different.

The Positives

The positives neurodiversity can be that a person can be  Sensitive, Empathetic, Honest, Creative, Innovative, Good at solving problems.

The beauty of the work I do as a Traditional Five Element Acupuncturist, is that each person is treated holistically as an individual, seeing your personality as who you are. We are all our own personality, though the world makes it more difficult for some, in my Acupuncture practice I help make the world an easier place to be by building a person in strength, resilience and confidence to move forward.

Parents and Family

I also treat many family members who have children or other family members with Neurodiversity, helping them through the stresses of diagnosis and help – which can be a difficult time. Traditional Five Element Acupuncture helps with the stress and resilience for the battles they need to fight. I also can recommend other professionals to help them.
