Letting Go and Acupuncture

Autumn, the Metal Element, and the Art of Letting Go

As the late summer fades, nature enters a period of transition. The warmth fades, the leaves turn brilliant shades of gold and amber, and trees begin the graceful process of letting go. In Five Element Acupuncture, Autumn is associated with the Metal Element. A time that invites us to reflect on what we need to release in order to create space for what truly matters.

Autumn offers an important lesson in letting go. Trees do not cling to their leaves. They trust life’s natural cycle, letting what has served its purpose return to the earth. We too are invited to consider what we may be holding onto unnecessarily.

The Wisdom of the Metal Element

The Metal Element governs the Lungs and Large Intestine. Physically, these organs are involved in taking in what is needed and letting go of what is no longer useful. On an emotional and spiritual level, Metal helps us discern what is valuable and what should be released.

Healthy Metal gives us the ability to appreciate life’s experiences while also accepting when something has come to an end. It brings clarity, self-respect, and a sense of inner order. It allows us to honour the past without becoming trapped by it.

When Metal is out of balance, we may find ourselves holding onto old grief, past disappointments, relationships that have ended, outdated beliefs, or patterns of thinking that no longer support our well being. We may feel weighed down by emotional clutter, unable to move forward freely.

Grief: The Emotion of Autumn

In Five Element theory, grief and sadness are the emotions associated with Metal. Grief is a natural and necessary part of being human. We experience it not only through bereavement but also through life transitions, changes in health, the ending of a relationship, children leaving home, retirement, or unrealised dreams.

Many people notice that feelings of loss become more apparent during autumn. As nature slows down, there is often more space for reflection. The shorter days can encourage us to turn inward and notice emotions that may have been pushed aside during busier seasons.

The aim is not to avoid grief or sadness but to allow these emotions to move naturally through us. Just as healthy lungs breathe in and breathe out, emotional health requires both holding and releasing.

What Might You Be Holding On To?

Autumn can be a valuable opportunity to ask yourself:

  • What no longer serves me?
  • What am I ready to release?
  • Is there an old hurt, disappointment, or expectation I have been carrying?
  • What would create more space, clarity, and peace in my life?

Letting go does not mean forgetting or dismissing our experiences. Rather, it means honouring them and allowing them to take their rightful place in our story without continuing to define us.

How Five Element Acupuncture Can Help

Five Element Acupuncture works on more than just physical symptoms. Treatment seeks to restore balance at the level of body, mind, and spirit, supporting each person’s unique constitutional needs.

During autumn, treatment may help individuals who are experiencing:

  • Grief and emotional loss
  • Difficulty moving on from past experiences
  • Feelings of isolation or disconnection
  • Respiratory issues such as recurring coughs or breathlessness
  • Low mood during seasonal changes
  • A sense of feeling “stuck” emotionally

By supporting the Metal Element, acupuncture can help restore the natural rhythm of receiving and releasing, allowing greater emotional resilience, clarity, and inner freedom.

Embracing Autumn

Autumn reminds us that letting go is not a loss but part of a natural cycle of renewal. When we release what is no longer needed, we create the conditions for growth, healing, and transformation.

As the leaves fall and nature prepares for winter’s stillness, perhaps we too can pause, breathe deeply, and ask ourselves what we are ready to lay down.

When we honour the wisdom of the Metal Element and discover that in letting go, we often find what is most precious.
