The Heart The Supreme Controller
In the Five Element Acupuncture Tradition, the Fire Element, the Heart, is more vital than you may have originally thought. Ancient masters called the Heart the Supreme Controller or Emperor, the most important figure in the court of our Body, Mind, and Spirit.
The Fire Element is unusual in comparison to the other four Elements as it has four “Officials”. These keep the Heart working effectively. The Pericardium, or Heart Protector, protects the heart from unnecessary harm; the Triple Heater preserves coordination, ensuring communication and balance throughout the body, to keep the heart functioning; and the Small Intestine keeps the pure energy available to the heart, sorting the pure from the impure. The heart needs great care and attention, as without it we do not exist.
The Officials
In Traditional Five Element Acupuncture, the organs are often called”Officials” because they are viewed as much more than physical anatomical structures. The tradition uses the metaphor of an imperial court, where each organ has a specific role or “office” in governing the health and harmony of the whole person.
The term “Official” therefore emphasizes that each organ system has a distinct responsibility, character, and contribution to the whole, just as government officials have different duties within a state. Health depends on these Officials working together harmoniously; if one becomes imbalanced, it can affect all the others.
Understanding these Officials can help you appreciate how Five Element Acupuncture views health and well-being beyond physical symptoms alone. See below the Officials of the Fire Element Acupuncture and their functions in brief
The Heart: The Supreme Controller
The Heart is considered the most important Official in the Fire Element. Ancient texts refer to it as the Supreme Controller, comparable to a wise and benevolent ruler.
The Heart’s role extends far beyond circulating blood. In Five Element Acupuncture, it houses the Shen, often translated as spirit, consciousness, or the essence of who we are. When the Heart is in balance, we may feel:
- Peaceful and at ease
- Emotionally connected
- Able to communicate authentically
- Joyful without excess
- Clear in thought and purpose
When the Heart struggles, a person may experience:
- Anxiety or restlessness
- Difficulty finding joy
- Feeling disconnected from others
- Emotional vulnerability
- Sleep disturbances
A healthy Heart allows our inner light to shine through our eyes, speech, and relationships.
The Small Intestine: The Sorter of Pure from Impure
The Small Intestine is known as the Sorter or Separator of Pure from Impure.
Physically, it separates nutrients from waste during digestion. On a deeper level, it helps us sort through life’s experiences, ideas, and emotions, identifying what is useful and what should be let go.
When the Small Intestine functions well, we can:
- Make clear decisions
- Discern truth from confusion
- Process experiences effectively
- Learn from challenges
When out of balance, we may feel:
- Mentally overwhelmed
- Indecisive
- Confused about relationships or life choices
- Unable to “digest” emotional experiences
The Small Intestine helps us find clarity, ensuring that what nourishes us is retained while what no longer serves us is released.
The Pericardium: Protector of the Heart
The Pericardium is known as the Heart Protector or Minister of the Heart.
Just as the physical pericardium surrounds and protects the heart, this Official safeguards our emotional wellbeing. It regulates how open or closed we are to others, helping us balance vulnerability with protection.
When the Pericardium is in harmony, we can:
- Form healthy relationships
- Trust appropriately
- Express affection and intimacy
- Maintain emotional boundaries
Signs of imbalance may include:
- Fear of emotional closeness
- Excessive emotional defensiveness
- Difficulty trusting others
- Feeling emotionally exposed or wounded
The Pericardium helps determine when to open our hearts and when to protect them, allowing meaningful human connection without becoming overwhelmed.
The Triple Heater : Coordinator of Harmony
The Triple Heater, also called Triple Burner, is perhaps the most unique Official in Chinese medicine.
Unlike the other Officials, it does not correspond to a single physical organ. Instead, it acts as a coordinator, ensuring communication and balance throughout the body.
The Triple Heater is often described as regulating:
- Temperature and warmth
- Fluid movement
- Circulation of energy
- Communication between different systems of the body
On an emotional level, the Triple Heater helps us adapt to our environment and maintain balance during change or stress.
When functioning well, we may feel:
- Comfortable in our surroundings
- Adaptable and resilient
- Balanced in our responses to life
- Calm under pressure
When imbalanced, we may experience:
- Feeling overwhelmed by stress
- Difficulty adapting to change
- A sense of being out of sync with ourselves or others
- Problems with regulating physical or emotional energy
The Triple Heater acts as the Fire Element’s coordinator, keeping all parts of the system working together harmoniously.
How the Fire Officials Work Together
The four Fire Officials do not act independently; they function as a team.
- The Heart provides wisdom, spirit, and direction.
- The Small Intestine sorts and clarifies information.
- The Pericardium protects the Heart and governs healthy relationships.
- The Triple Heater coordinates communication and balance throughout the system.
Together, they support our ability to experience genuine joy, connect with others, and live with emotional and spiritual l-being.

Fire Element and Emotional Health
One of the key emotions associated with the Fire Element is Joy. In balance, joy manifests as warmth, laughter, enthusiasm, and connection. Out of balance, it may appear as either a lack of joy or excessive excitement that leaves us feeling scattered or exhausted.
Five Element Acupuncture seeks to identify and address the underlying imbalance within the Officials, helping restore harmony at a deeper level.
Five Element Care
Traditional Five Element Acupuncture views health as much more than the absence of illness. The Fire Element Officials remind us that wellbeing depends on our ability to connect, communicate, discern, protect our hearts, and maintain harmony within ourselves and with others.
When these Officials are working together effectively, we are better able to experience authentic joy, meaningful relationships, and a sense of purpose in our lives the very essence of the Fire Element.

Testermonial
“I visited Hannah for treatment to help with a sporadic heart arrhythmia which I had researched as an area she had worked on previously.
As a fit and healthy man in my 50s, I was looking for a thoughtful, balanced approach. Hannah’s calm, reassuring manner immediately put me at ease, and she took the time to listen carefully to my concerns. I particularly appreciated her respect for and recognition of conventional medicine, alongside her acupuncture practice.
I felt genuinely heard and well cared for throughout, and I’d happily recommend her to others”
