Acupuncture for Primary Dysmenorrhea – Period Pain

Primary dysmenorrhea, commonly known as period pain or menstrual cramps without an underlying pelvic disease, affects a large number of women during their reproductive years. Characterised by cramping pain in the lower abdomen before or during menstruation. Primary dysmenorrhea can interfere with daily activities, work, school, and overall quality of life. While pain medications are often used for symptom relief are not good to take for extended times. Traditional acupuncture is a safe and holistic treatment for menstrual pain and well-being.

Periods Should not be so Painful

Periods should not be this painful. Do not just put up with them. I will always advise that it is important to get yourself checked out by your GP and gynaecologist when you are regularly getting painful and heavy periods and ask for investigations. This is important before starting any medications, as often the hormones you may be given may not be the solution or helpful for your long-term health. If menstrual pain is severe, worsening, or accompanied by unusual symptoms, it is important to consult a healthcare professional to rule out underlying medical conditions.

Understanding Primary Dysmenorrhea

Primary Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for painful menstrual periods. It happens because your uterus contracts to shed its lining-prostaglandins, hormone-like substances trigger uterine contractions during menstruation. Excessive prostaglandin levels can cause intense uterine muscle contractions, reduced blood flow to the uterus, and significant pain. The pain usually occurs just before your period and the first few days.

The pain typically begins just before your period and subsides after about 3 days days, though the pain can be intense, disabling you for a few days a month. Primary dysmenorrhea refers to recurrent pain with no identifiable cause.

Secondary dysmenorrhea results from conditions like endometriosis, fibroids or even cancer, so it is important to investigate medically. Though acupuncture can be used alongside medical investigations and treatment.

Symptoms include:

  • Cramping in the lower abdomen
  • Lower back pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue/exhaustion
  • Diarrhoea or digestive discomfort
