Shoulder Pain and Acupuncture
A Natural, Individualised Approach to Pain Relief
Shoulder pain can be persistent, frustrating, and disruptive to daily life. Whether it affects your sleep, work, exercise, or simple movements such as dressing or driving, ongoing shoulder pain can significantly reduce quality of life. Each person experiences this condition in an individual way, depending on their constitution and experiences in life.
At my acupuncture clinic, I regularly support people with shoulder pain using a carefully tailored, evidence-informed, personal Traditional Acupuncture approach.
Why Shoulder Pain Is So Common
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, allowing a wide range of movement. This flexibility also makes it more vulnerable to strain, inflammation, and stiffness. Shoulder pain commonly develops due to:
- Muscle tension and overuse
- Rotator cuff irritation or weakness
- Frozen shoulder (progressive stiffness and pain)
- Tendon or bursa inflammation
- Poor posture or prolonged desk work
Pain may come on gradually with no clear injury, or it may develop after physical strain or a period of reduced movement.
Acupuncture can help when
- Shoulder pain has lasted longer than expected
- Pain is affecting sleep or daily activities
- You prefer a drug‑free or low‑medication approach
- You need a holistic approach to address your individual needs
- You want a complementary therapy alongside physiotherapy or exercise
How Acupuncture May Help Shoulder Pain
Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. Acupuncture aims to:
- Reduce pain by stimulating the body’s natural pain‑relieving chemicals
- Relax tight muscles around the shoulder and neck
- Improve local circulation
- Support recovery of movement and function
- Treating the root cause of the pain
Many patients describe acupuncture as deeply relaxing, with treatment sessions offering both physical relief and a sense of overall calm.
What to Expect from Acupuncture Treatment
Every person and every shoulder problem is different. A holistic and in-depth assessment of your condition, medical history, systems, and contributing factors before treatment begins.
Your acupuncture care plan may involve:
- Local points around the shoulder and upper arm
- Distant points chosen to support pain regulation and healing
- Gentle needling techniques appropriate for sensitive or painful shoulders
- Treatment for your whole system
- Advice on movement, posture, or self‑care where appropriate
Acupuncture is often used alongside exercises, physiotherapy, or other treatments as part of a wider recovery plan.
What Does the Evidence Say?
Clinical research suggests acupuncture can help reduce shoulder pain and improve function for some people, particularly in the short to medium term. Studies also show that acupuncture may be especially helpful when combined with movement‑based rehabilitation rather than used in isolation.
As with any healthcare treatment, individual results vary. We believe in being open and realistic our role is to help you decide whether acupuncture is a suitable option for you and your shoulder pain.
