Mental Health Awareness Week – Stress

Mental Health Awareness Week – Stress

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week (14-20 May), focusing on Stress. Research has shown that two thirds of us experience a mental health problem in our lifetimes, and stress is a key factor in this.

By tackling stress, we can go a long way to tackle mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, and, in some instances, self-harm and suicide. We will look at how we can tackle stress and help improve our mental health.

Over the years of treating my patients with Traditional Five Element Acupuncture I have worked with many situations of stress that has had a detrimental effect on a person’s health and wellbeing.

One situation I have recently treated is a young lady in her 20’s in the last year come out of a relationship, had to sell the house they were sharing, move house, deal with her Mother working away, and doing a job that is not at all satisfying with an unpleasant boss, not able to do her hobby due to work pressures.

You may say that is much to deal with; which it is but many people are living day to day for years with this type of stress.

Not having family around to support you, a job that is not satisfying, and relationships that are not right for you, which you also may be stuck in, not feeling able to have a hobby or exercise because you are feeling so overloaded and overwhelmed.

I am afraid to say that I treat this kind of stress in my patients’ every day.

The lady I am talking about is now happier, stronger and more confident; consequences of this are that she has applied for and is starting a new job, has started a new relationship; with it sound like a lovely person she has known for years, she is exercising again, gaining support from those near and far to her and walking her dog. She is having CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) alongside Traditional Five Element Acupuncture which is a good combination for her recovery.

If this situation has been left I do really feel that she could have become seriously depressed which could have had detrimental effects on the rest of her life. Now she is caring for herself for the long term.

I often work with patients who are also undergoing therapy as these treatments work well along side each other; my treatment working with their spirit which enable them work with the therapist.

So look after yourself- get help before you go too deep. I am here to help. I love to see my patients blossom again and see their emotinal wellbeing improve.
