Sinusitis, Pain and Acupuncture

Sinusitis, Pain and Acupuncture

What is Sinusitus

Sinusitis and sinus pain can come from infection and inflammation, the inflammation can continue for a long time after any infection has gone. Your sinuses are on your forehead – frontal, each side of the bridge of your nose – ethmoid and sphenoid and maxillary at the side of your nose and into your cheeks. However, the pain you can experience can be all over the face, head, neck, teeth and jaw – really quite horrible.

Acute and Chronic sinusitis

Often sinusitis can be alongside a cold, flu or COVID in its acute phase. This is often when there is much discharge from your nose, pain in your face, and mussiness in your head, feeling generally unwell, sometimes antibiotics are needed in this phase if there is a high temperature.

However, if the sinuses continue to stay blocked or repeatedly become blocked and there is no visible discharge at this chronic stage can be very painful and exhausting with the pain.

There may be an underlying weakness in the body’s energy which results in repeated invasions of viruses – Traditional Five Element Acupuncture can help treat this to reduce the repeated infections

Acupuncture Help

Most of the time patients come for treatment when they have chronic pain from sinusitis, sometimes constant and other times getting repeated episodes, which rule their lives.

When a patient has Traditional Five Element Acupuncture, treatment the whole system is always treated, assessing where there are blockages of your vital energy – Qi.

The treatment will often be in the area of pain, as well as points around the body, to treat the immune system and general health. With chronic sinusitis, there is likely to be an underlying weakness or imbalance in the body’s Qi, due to repeated infections.

Treating Underlying Vulnerability

When there are chronic or repeated episodes of pain and sinus blockage, there may be an underlying vulnerability. Therefore Traditional Five Element Acupuncture treats the patient’s primary imbalance also being aware that the Lungs need to be strengthened and Spleen Qi can have an overproduction of phlegm. Treating to help improve the immune system and overall well-being to clear and prevent further episodes and pain.

Digestion

When treating a patient with sinusitis, it is also important to take into consideration certain foods that can cause problems. To strengthen the digestive system and avoid foods which are difficult to digest. Phlegm is produced by the Spleen and stored in the Lungs. The Spleen can struggle to digest certain foods which puts strain on the digestion leading to overproduction of phlegm. These foods are dairy, greasy food, caffeine, and processed foods to name a few.

There may be a need to give up these foods for a while until the condition has cleared.  However, if sinusitis is chronic this may be longer, or look at a change of diet for wellbeing.

Your acupuncturist will take a full history talking through your medical history and your systems to treat with a holistic approach to your care.
