Autumn – Qi contracts

Friday 23rd September is Autunm Exquniox a good time to care for yourself going inward to prepare for Winter. Your energy – Qi contracts in preparation for the colder months.

Nourish yourself

Autumn is a transitional time from Yang to Yin time of year from Summer into Winter. A time to reconnect and go inward, a time to nourish yourself and give yourself some self-care.

The Metal Element

Autumn is the time of the Metal Element. The Metal Element is a time for focusing mentally, letting go, and contraction. It is related to the Lungs, Large Intestine (colon) and the season of Autumn.

Lungs and Colon

Physically, the Lungs sit in the chest above the diaphragm. The Lungs filter the air we breathe which oxygenates our blood. We also expel carbon dioxide through our exhale.

The Large Intestine (the colon) stores and excretes waste. It’s also responsible for the absorption of water.

In Traditional Five Element Acupuncture, the Metal Element and the Lungs and Large intestine are considered organs related to our skin, immunity and the emotion of grief.

Energetics of Lungs and Colon

Energetically, the Lungs draw in Qi from the air, circulate the Qi and send it downward where the Kidneys grasp it. Sometimes the Lung is seen to be misting or sending vapour throughout the body because they move and transport fluids.

Lungs and Immunity

The Lungs also help to circulate defensive Qi (Wei Qi). This circulates on the surface of the body acting as protection from common colds and viruses (eg flu and covid)

This kind of Qi is like our immune system. The Metal Element empowers us to connect with sensation and embodied knowing, appreciate preciousness and begin to move inwards.

To nourish the Metal Element you can receive mindful touch (like massage or acupuncture). Practice conscious breathing, mindfulness of the body and breath, and us postures that open the arms, chest, and lungs. Walk outside in the fresh windy Autumn days and rustle in the leaves.
