Summer Solstice – Seasonal Acupuncture

Summer Solstice – Seasonal Acupuncture

Yin, Yang, Qi and Elements

June 21st is Summer Solstice, mid Summers Night. As seasonal energies go, this is really the pinnacle of Summer Energy (Qi) Yang. Yang – Light, Masculine, Expansive, Space, Outward, Active  Qi. As Yin is Dark, Feminine, Contracting, Earth, Inward, Still Qi.

The Element of the Five Elements that is associated with Summer is Fire.

Cycles

Our body works in conjunction with the daily, monthly and yearly cycles. We are healthiest when following nature’s cycle.

The most basic rule is being active during the day and sleeping at night. During the Summer’s increase of Yang energy and sunlight, we may find ourselves waking up earlier and staying up later, enjoying bright bursts of spontaneous activity, going out, and socializing more.

This is all in harmony with the season. However, all of the extra and light and activity can cause disturbance in sleep quantity and quality.

One way we can balance the Summer Yang Fire Qi is to create space for self-care, connection with others, as well as time one your own and slowing down. Giving yourself a little time each day to be quiet and rest.

Summer Fire

Here are some other ways to embrace and balance Summer’s Yang Fire Qi

  • Balance the heat and activity of your Fire Element by swimming in a cold, dark pool or stream
  • Be still, to calm the activity of Summer Fire – meditate, relax and get plenty of sleep
  • Laugh – sounds are associated with the Five Elements and the sound associated with Fire is laughter
  • Connect and spend time with loved ones – Love is related to the Fire Element
  • Joy is the Emotion associated with Fire – find Joy and be Grateful every day
  • The taste for summer is Bitter, so eat really good dark chocolate, coffee, beer, and garden greens
  • Self-care and self-love as well as creating the space and time to do the things you love to do, hobbies, time with friends and family, enjoying the light and sunshine, holidays and quiet time.
