Mental Health Awareness Week 2021
Nature the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week 2021
Connecting with Nature
During long months of the pandemic, millions of us turned to nature, many people found that going for walks outside was one of our top coping strategies and green spaces had been vital for our mental health. Studies also found that during lockdowns, people not only spent more time in nature but were noticing it more. During lockdown many have discovered our fundamental human need to connect with nature.
Laws of Nature
Traditional Five Element Acupuncture treats using the Laws of Nature, each of the Five Elements relates to a season Fire is Summer, Earth is late Summer or the transition between seasons, Metal is Autumn, Water is Winter and Wood is Spring. We thrive when we embrace our natural rhythms.
Five Element Seasons
We are made up of all the Five Elements, as in Nature, all the Seasons all need each other to function and move forward – as the Five Elements need to flow into each other. All of us are born with one Element which is constitutionally slightly more imbalanced than the others. This imbalance can cause repetitive negative states or difficulties expressing certain emotions.
When one Element dysfunctions all the others do not flow and feed each other. We are connected beings that need to interact with ourselves, our environment and each other. All of these have become extremely disorganised and confused in this last year, as we have not been able to flow with the seasons and ‘normal’ life.
Emotions and Mental Health
When we are looking at Mental Health each of the Five Elements has Emotions and characteristics that affect how we respond to the world around us.
Fire – Love, Joy, Lack of Joy, Sadness, Control
Earth – Sympathy, Rejection of Sympathy, Caring, Overwhelm
Metal – Grief, Lack of Grief, Value, Awe
Water – Fear, Danger, Power, Paralysis
Wood – Anger, Repressed Anger, In charge, Dynamic
To establish which of the Elements which is primarily imbalanced you can read more on my website page :- https://www.southwellacupuncture.co.uk/acupuncture-five-elements/
When you come for Traditional Five Element Acupuncture treatment your first appointment will be the time when your practitioner asks questions to assess your Body, Mind and Spirit to find your imbalanced Element – your Causative Factor. This is the basis for the treatment your diagnosis is your Element, to treat you.
Nature and our Mental Health
Nature is so central to our psychological and emotional health, that it’s almost impossible to realise good mental health for all without a greater connection to the natural world. For most of human history, we lived as part of nature. It is only in the last five generations that so many of us have lived and worked in a context that is largely separated from nature. And it is only since a 1960s study in the US found that patients who were treated in hospitals with a view of nature recovered faster, that science has started to unpack the extraordinary health benefits.
