Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and Acupuncture

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and Acupuncture

The heart’s upper chambers normally beat in a regular, coordinated rhythm with the heart’s lower chambers. In atrial fibrillation, the heart’s upper chambers can quiver out of rhythm.

The result is an irregular heart rhythm that can cause symptoms, such as shortness of breath, weakness, heart palpitations, and sometimes a heart murmur. The condition can also lead to blood clots developing in the upper chambers, which can cause a stroke.

Atrial Fibrillation treatments can vary based on the symptoms that people experience. While it’s important for people to follow a doctor’s advice related to Atrial Fibrillation treatments, they might also choose to supplement medical treatments with natural ones.

Although natural treatments are often not widely studied, acupuncture may help to reduce the symptoms and effects of Atrial Fibrillation. As well as getting enough sleep, and reducing or minimizing stress.

Some triggers of Atrial Fibrillation include:

  • Fatigue
  • Stress
  • Exhaustion
  • Air pollution
  • Caffeine
  • some over-the-counter, prescription, and recreational drugs

Five Element Acupuncture, the traditional Chinese medicine approach, may help those with Atrial Fibrillation control their heart rates, according to a study published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

In my experience patients can be helped with Traditional Five Element Acupuncture to reduce stress, anxiety as a cause and effect of Atrial Fibrillation and advice on lifestyle changes have made a positive difference. Traditional Five Element Acupuncture can be used alongside western medical treatments for Atrial Fibrillation.
