Psoriasis and Acupuncture

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes the rapid build-up of skin cells. This build-up of cells causes scaling on the skin’s surface. About one-third of the people with psoriasis have a family genetic connection and is regarded as an autoimmune disease which in this case involves overactive T– cells. The root cause of psoriasis can be factors such as endocrine, metabolic or immunology factors. When treated from the initial stages, the condition can be contained, Traditional Five Element Acupuncture can be helpful to treat the root cause.

Traditional Five Element Acupuncture requires a number of sessions before improvement, lifestyle changes will most likely be recommended such as avoiding smoking, stress, alcohol, dietary changes and making sure that you have enough sleep, as this will help avoid triggering the symptoms, though the treatment will help you cope with these changes. As Traditional Five Element Acupuncture treats the person as a whole Body, Mind and Spirit which, all have an effect on psoriasis.

A study conducted at the New York University involving over 60 patients showed very promising results using acupuncture for psoriasis.

  • The subjects involved in the study had up to 15 acupuncture sessions and after the course of treatment half of the people had an almost complete clearance of the skin lesions. About 16% had minimal improvement.
  • In addition, acupuncture has been shown to release natural pain-killing endorphins which also trigger anti-inflammatory mechanisms to reduce the redness associated with psoriasis.
  • Acupuncture has long been used to reduce stress and anxiety which are known to trigger psoriasis.
