Acupuncture and IBS

IBS Awareness Month

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a fairly common disorder that strikes anywhere between 10 – 15% of the general population so there is no need to feel like you’re suffering alone. IBS is a functional disorder of the bowel which the western medicine model struggle to treat as it due to the absence of visible structural abnormality.

Symptoms of IBS vary from person to person; there can be abdominal cramps, bloating, flatulence, trapped wind, constipation, diarrhoea, or fluctuating from one to the other. This can be constant or intermittent; it is typically a chronic, recurrent disorder. Women are 2-3 times more likely to develop IBS, and often suffer more symptoms around their periods.

The exact cause is unclear due to the fact that each person is different and responds to life in a variety of ways. Anxiety, depression and stress do appear to be a large factor, though diet sensitivities are factors too.

The beauty of traditional five element acupuncture is that we treat each patient as an individual looking at your whole system; body, mind and spirit and how this all intertwines with your lifestyle, and stressors.
