Acupuncture to aid recovery from Shingles
Shingles (herpes zoster) arises from the chicken pox virus. It is a member of the herpes virus family but not the same one that causes other herpes infections (herpes simplex). Both forms of herpes remain dormant in the nervous system after initial infection and can reactivate following minor infections, stress and weakened immunity.
After the chickenpox virus has been contracted, it travels from the skin along the nerve paths to the roots of the nerves where it becomes inactive.
The chickenpox virus then ‘hibernates’. When the virus is reactivated, it travels via the nerve paths to the skin. It is not known what factors trigger a reactivation of the virus.
Shingles generally affects’ the elderly, but it occasionally occurs in children who have had chickenpox within the first year of their lives and in people with an immune deficiency.
Shingles can be a sign of immunodeficiency, caused by HIV or chemotherapy, for example.
Traditional Five Element Acupuncture can have an effect on improving your immune system, help with the pain of shingles and help you regain your energy, to aid recovery.
Also if you have an immune deficiency or going through treatments that can cause this, traditional five element acupuncture may help improve your immune system and may reduce side effects of treatment and illness.
When you become stressed or have ongoing stress, the weaker your immune system becomes, allowing a virus to become active, which is why many people succumb to cold sores and colds when they’re run down.
It also useful to look at your diet and supplementation when trying to recover from shingles. By taking vitamin C, zinc and looking at the Lysine and arginine balance in your diet.
