World Cancer Day

is an international day marked today February 4th  to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment. World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Decloration, written in 2008. The primary goal of the World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death by cancer by 2020.

Let’s think about prevention – care for your body, mind and spirit. Think carefully about what you put in and on your body – think clean food and clean personal care. Exercise, stretch and meditate. You are responsible for your health. Caring for Carers

I feel strongly about the care of end stage cancer that every person deserves to be tended for with loving care and attention, to be pain and anxiety free as possible. My experiences as a cancer nurse in the past taught me this and also caring for my Mother.

I also treat many carers of family members, who have cancer supporting them though the exhaustion, difficult times and grief of losing a loved one. These people often find themselves forgotten or neglect to look after themselves.

How acupuncture can help with cancer and treatment symptoms

Cancer and the treatments for cancer are associated with various symptoms. Fatigue is the most common symptom reported by survivors of cancer Forty percent of people with early or intermediate stage cancer, and 90% with advanced cancer have moderate to severe pain; up to 70% of those with cancer pain do not receive adequate pain relief.

When undergoing treatment for cancer using traditional five element acupuncture alongside other treatments, can improve body, mind and spirit function.

Pain In some cases traditional five element acupuncture may provide long-term pain relief in patients with cancer, also working alongside the pain medication and treatment.

Fatigue – traditional five element acupuncture can be helpful with fatigue caused by cancer and cancer treatments.

Xerostomia – or oral dryness, is one of the most common complaints experienced by patients who have had radiotherapy of the oral cavity and neck region. Traditional five element acupuncture may help ease some of these symptoms.

Leucopoenia – is a decrease in the number of white blood cells (leukocytes) found in the blood, which places individuals at increased risk of infection, when a patient having cancer treatment this often a side effect. Traditional five element acupuncture may help with chemotherapy-induced leucopoenia.

Vasomotor symptoms – hot flushes, night sweats and vaginal dryness, as many other of the numerous symptoms of menopause can be helped with traditional five element acupuncture. These are mostly caused by hysterectomy and breast cancer treatments.

Nausea and vomiting – traditional five element acupuncture can help relieve nausea and vomiting especially in acute situations, this of courses is not the cancer causing but western medicine side effects of treatment.

In general, traditional five element acupuncture is believed to stimulate our system. The resulting biochemical changes influence the body’s homeostatic mechanisms, thus promoting physical and emotional well-being.

NB- Traditional five element acupuncture may be used for some of the symptoms of cancer, and the side effects of conventional cancer treatments, but it is not used to address the cancer itself.
