Five element acupuncture for Pre- menstral syndrome (PMS)
Premenstrual Syndrome, otherwise known as PMS is experienced by about 75% of all women at some point of their life. PMS can happen at any time between ovulation and menstruation and thus could last up to two weeks.
Symptoms may include:- intense emotions leading to sadness, depression, anxiety, anger, cravings, social withdrawal and poor mental focus. In addition the following physical symptoms may accompany PMS: abdominal bloating, diarrhoea, muscle aches, headaches, weight gain, acne, fatigue and insomnia. For some woman the symptoms of PMS are so bad they cannot function in their daily lives and become debilitated.
Conventional medicine treatments usually consist of prescription medications such as anti-depressants, diuretics, birth control pills to regulate hormones, and Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). There can be long term side effects from such treatments, in addition these treatments only put a band-aid on the symptoms and do nothing to correct the underlying dysfunctions of the body allowing PMS occur. It is these underlying dysfunctions that can later lead to other disorders including fibroids, infertility, and severe menopause symptoms.
As many western treatments are either ineffective or too invasive as they may require prescription drug intervention, many woman choose to simple endure their PMS – which is an unacceptable way to live.
The approach that traditional five element acupuncturist is to work with each patients individual needs experiences, looking at the underlying factors that affect their PMS. The beauty of this system is that each patient encounters PMS differently to the next so required different treatment, we treat the person – not the symptoms.
I have seen many women’s lives turned around with treatment including myself when I first had traditional five element acupuncture 25 years ago.
